in Soho, around Mercer and Spring...there are some unique, colorful buildings and stoops and cobblestone streets. Also, if you go further northwest, towards Greenwich Village (around W. Christopher St), the streets become more narrow and the architecture is less updated, but more beautiful...Another good spot is up near Washington Square Park North and University Place (there's an alleyway in the International Commoons area of NYU with some pretty gates that would make very good backdrops for photos.
