I did specific table seating and place cards for my Chinese banquet. I think it's helpful, but people moved around to sit with who they wanted to anyway. It's A LOT of work. My main goal was to mix people together so that friends and family of both bride and groom could meet each other. As a wedding guest, I'd always felt that having strictly bride's side vs. groom's side and people just sitting with who they already know seemed against the spirit of marriage. Plus, I was bored sitting with the same siblings, cousins all the time! I always wondered who the other people in the room were. But many of my older Chinese relatives did request to sit with other relatives, which I honored. I guess what you do depends on your crowd. It was worth it to me to do it.
